Cancer Research UK to become our Charity of the Year for 2012

10 January 2012

We are delighted to announce that our Charity of the Year for 2012 will be Cancer Research UK – an amazing organisation that has saved so many lives through its ground breaking research and with whom Tesco has a long and proud association.

With more than one in three people in the UK developing some form of cancer during their lifetime, cancer is likely to touch each and every one of us in some way. Huge steps in combating the disease have already been made, but there is still much more to do.

Starting in March, we are aiming to raise £10 million in a single year to be spent on research and awareness to improve early diagnosis and detection of the disease, help more people survive cancer and keep more families together. I know that you will work hard to help and our fundraising efforts will support up to 100 vital research projects in local communities across the UK.

This new and strengthened partnership will be in addition to our continued support of Race for Life.

During the past 10 years over two-thirds of Tesco staff have taken part or supported this great event, raising a fantastic £7.5 million themselves and helping the Race for Life series as a whole to reach its overall total to date of an incredible £457 million. As in previous years Tesco will be paying the registration fee for our staff to enter Race For Life, you will receive more details on how to sign up in March.

We would also like to thank you for your efforts so far in helping to raise money for our current Charity of the Year, Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer Scotland. So far through yours and our customer’s efforts we have raised £5.7 million, and with 8 weeks still to go we know you will go all out to raise even more money.
