Why do we have a young people’s panel?

OYP bucket imageWe are proud to employ over 70,000 young people in the UK. Young people are vital for the future success of our business – they are our leaders of tomorrow and our customers of the future. We want to listen to the views and ideas of our young colleagues and understand how we can best support young people both in our business and in our communities.

What will it involve?

Opportunities for young Tesco colleaguesOur UK Young People’s Panel is made up of talented and enthusiastic young people from across our business, working in our stores, distribution centres, call centres and offices.

The Young People’s Panel offer their thoughts and insight on our plans to create opportunities for young people and advise on how to best engage with them. There is also the opportunity to offer their perspective on other areas of the business’ work.

The panel meets four times a year, meetings typically run over one to two days per quarter.

How will I benefit?

selfieBeing a member of the Young People’s Panel is a great opportunity for you to help shape our activities, as well as developing your own skills and experiences. You will have the opportunity to meet colleagues, build your network and learn about our work in all different parts of the business. You will have the opportunity to meet senior business leaders and share your thoughts with them. Being a member of the panel will also allow you to practice and develop skills such as collaboration, communication and innovation.

Selection

All young colleagues will be given the opportunity to submit an application online explaining why they should be a member of the Tesco Young People’s Panel. Each candidate is also required to upload a 60 second video application onto Yammer (Young People’s Panel page)

The existing Young People’s Panel members and representatives of the UK Opportunities for Young People Champions Group will select the new panel members.

The membership of the panel is reviewed every 12 months

Role of Young People’s Panel

To help guide Tesco’s work to create opportunities for young people by providing a young person’s perspective on plans and policies.

Key activities

  • Offering feedback on plans to create opportunities for young people.
  • Where relevant, offering feedback on other business plans where they relate to young people.
  • Advising on how best to engage young people, both inside and outside the business, in our initiatives.
  • Acting as ambassadors for Tesco’s work on creating opportunities for young people, including taking part in internal and external communication activity as required.
  • Meeting senior business leaders to learn about different parts of the business and how to get on at Tesco.

Meetings

The UK Young People’s Panel meets on a quarterly basis, for a maximum of two days. Generally, these are face to face meetings but some meetings may take place via conference call or telepresence, but the panel will meet in person at least once a year. All travel expenses to attend meetings will be covered.

Sub group meetings for work delivered by the Young People’s Panel will happen via conference call, telepresence or by Google Hangout on an adhoc, voluntary basis.

2015 quarterly meeting schedule:

  • 1st & 2nd June 2015
  • 7th & 8th September 2015

If you would like to become a panel member, you will need to commit to attend on the 2015 dates outlined and have the approval of your line manager to participate.

To apply you need to complete the application form below and upload a video to Yammer, our internal colleague network.

Use the video to explain in 60 seconds why you would like to be a member of the Young People’s Panel. Your colleagues will be able to view these and show their support by commenting and ‘liking’ your video. Please post this in the UK Young People’s Panel group and tag Emma Gittoes into the post.

Don’t worry, we’re not looking for a superbly edited video, we just want to hear from you, listen to your ideas and learn what you can contribute to the UK Young People’s Panel.
