Everyone is welcome at Tesco and we take equality, diversity and inclusion seriously. In addition to the support we provide through our colleague network Out At Tesco, we also partner with Stonewall, the UK’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights charity to improve how we attract, support and develop all colleagues so they feel confident to be themselves at work.
As part of our partnership with Stonewall, we participate in their Workplace Equality Index. This well-respected annual bench-marking survey gives us insight into how we address diversity in our workplace. It was interesting to see that this year we are ranked in the top third which is an increase from last year. Overall we came 3rd out of the 7 Retail companies that took part – which is an improvement on our ranking last year. It’s also great to know that 81% of colleagues surveyed said they felt able to be themselves at work. Last month, our Out At Tesco network also received special recognition from Stonewall for the work that’s been done to support the wider transgender community in Scotland and the colleague engagement we achieved by supporting the No Bystanders campaign in 2014. During this campaign, Out at Tesco network members visited our stores, distribution centres and offices across the country to encourage colleagues to sign up to the pledge – we achieved the most sign-ups of all UK employers.
In 2015, Out At Tesco aim to focus on improving our organisation in a few key areas – including our mentoring scheme, making our participation in Pride 2015 our biggest yet, and building local teams across the country to get more members involved in the network. Anyone can join Out at Tesco here – everyone is welcome!
